huerto roma verde, Espacio comunitario
On September 19, 1985, a tremendous earthquake shook Mexico City, destroying many large scale public housing buildings. Rather than replace the buildings, the Director of ISSSTE Dr. Alejandro Carrillo Castro declared ""No new buildings will be built here, in their place we will make green spaces as a tribute." Sadly, the space would remain abandoned for the next 27 years.
But in 2010, an organization called La Cuadra partnered with community members, businessmen, recognized architects, and neighbors to restore the area and provide support to the community in the form of food, events, workshops, exhibitions and more.
Upon returning from Standing Rock, ND Jamie Emerson began a 6 month residency at the Art Life Institute in Kingston, NY. There he began collaborating with performance artist Alejandro Chellet, who in turn invited Jamie to exhibit his drawings and paintings from Standing Rock in Mexico City. In addition to the exhibition of this work, Jamie was also invited to execute a mural for the Huerto. Completed in just 8 days, "El Poder del Futuro" features 17 figures and one cat, all working to build the future. Every figure depicted was a member of the Huerto, and was drawn from life.
